Open a level and, once Stripe is connected, there is a Charge For This Level block underneath the usual settings.

The fields:

  • Price: what a new member pays. 0 or empty means the level is free and behaves exactly as it always has
  • Currency: defaults to the currency on your payments card, and each level can differ
  • How often: one off payment, every month, or every year
  • Free trial: days before the first charge, on recurring levels only. 0 means they pay straight away

Saving a priced level also creates it in Stripe. The Payments tab says Ready once Stripe has it, or Not Synced if Stripe refused.

How a member buys it:

Exactly the same shortcode as a free level, raxm_register with the level slug. When the level has a price the button says the price, so nobody ever reaches a card form by surprise. They fill the form, land on Stripe's checkout, pay, and come back with access. A visitor who is already logged in gets a one click join button straight to checkout.

Why the account is created before the payment:

Their WordPress account is made first, as pending, and the membership is granted when Stripe confirms the payment.

The alternative is asking somebody to type their details after paying, where any hiccup costs them the account they just bought. That is the worse failure, so this is the way round it works.

Abandoned signups are tidied up automatically after a day, and that cleanup is deliberately cautious. It only removes accounts that never paid, hold no membership at all, have written nothing on the site, and are not administrators. Anything else is left alone and logged.

Changing a price:

Changing a price creates a new price in Stripe and applies to new members only. Anybody already paying keeps the price they signed up at, which is how Stripe works and almost always what you want.

What is not automatic yet:

Moving a member between two paid levels is not automatic. A subscription belongs to the level it was bought on, so to move somebody you cancel their subscription in Stripe and let them join the new level. The level editor says so rather than half doing it behind your back.
